3 great tube guitar amps for tone freaks
Once upon a time there used to be only one style of guitar amplifier available - ones that used valves - or tubes as they are generally called - to generate the ability to amplify sound.
These tubes are what you used to see in old radios from the 50’s and early 60’s, before transistors were developed which then lead to solid state circuitry being incorporated in amps in order to generate amplification.
Today of course most guitar amplifiers depend exclusively on solid state circuits for sound amplification.
This is because many amplifier producers are targeting the low cost of entry level amps in an attempt to create volume sales amongst beginner musicians.
These consumer type entry level guitar amplifiers do have a weakness though in that the sound they deliver can be thin and a little concocted - even though you get a lot of wizardry included such as crazy effects and distortions.
With a solid state amp the sound is of course manufactured, and following on from this there has been a subsequent movement back to searching for warmer tones and fatter analog sound that you can only achieve from tube based amps.
At some point in the life of each and every guitarist a crossroads is reached where those who search for tone head down the path to find a tube amplifier.
An awesome starting point for a tube guitar amp is the Vox ac15 amp. It is a compact, single speaker 15 watt tube amplifier, light enough to move about and with plenty of grunt to make yourself heard with the rest of the band.If you are playing individually this Vox ac15 is great for jazz and blues players, and would be groovy with a semi-hollow guitar. Don’t be fooled by the 15 watts either, this is equal to more like a 40-50 watt solid state amplifier.
Most tube amps you want to have turned up to about 60-75% of their volume as this is normally there most efficient range where they generate the warmest tones.
Moving up in performance you can try the Vox ac30 amplifier, with 30 watts of tube muscle. Little has changed in the design of these amplifiers since when they first accompanied the British invasion of the 1960’s.
In essence the Vox ac30 is a reissue of a model released more than 45 years ago - a testament to the fact that great amps never die.
Next on the lineup is the Orange Rockerverb 50, in effect a head and cabinet unit squeezed into a tube combo amplifier with tons of power yet still light enough to move it around single handedly.
This amplifier is one of a range of Orange tube amps used by many famous artists such as Kid Rock, and Jimmy Page. It is very versatile and can be used for blues, rock, and pop. Awesome for creating your own tone either on stage or in the studio.
